Meet the team: Jo, General Manager

As we approach the first anniversary of Constantine House, we thought what better time to introduce you to our team and give you an insight into working in hospitality on a country estate. In the first of our ‘meet the team’ series, we sat down with Jo our General Manager, to find out what a typical day in her role looks like, her career highlights and tips for working in the industry.

Jo, please tell us about your role and what it involves…

I am the General Manager of Constantine House and my role is to ensure that all operations run smoothly in order to provide an exceptional guest experience.

Have you always worked in hospitality? Tell us where it all started…

I began my career very early on in hospitality and spent many years working overseas in a challenging environment where a constant smile was needed. I progressed  into an operations manager role for an entrepreneur who launched airside VIP lounges and my vision for the ultimate guest experience was the success of this venture.

What do you like most about working at Constantine House and Thorpe Estate?

The opportunity to work for an historic estate does not come around very often, especially one that’s embarking on an exciting journey of development over the next ten years. I am proud to be part of an environment of outstanding beauty, and to work alongside Tristan, the Owner, who has the vision for evolving the estate and securing its future for years to come.

Which is your favourite room at Constantine House and why?

Every room is comfy and unique however it has to be the dining area that gives  an impressive view of all four counties and makes me smile every day.

What has been your career highlight to date?

My career highlight happened here at Constantine House. It was hosting our very first booking in March 2023 for the wedding of Andy and Lucy. After months of preparation behind the scenes, it was wonderful to see the project come to life and to finally welcome the first of many lovely couples staying with us for a very special occasion.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to work in hospitality?

To be a natural in hospitality you must be able to put yourself in the guest's shoes and be one step ahead. If you can do that you can avoid most complaints and enhance the guest experience every time.  Be approachable, professional, polite and smile no matter what.  I never try to over complicate things and try to think creatively as the ultimate skill is regulating what you invest your energy into.  Sometimes it is truly the little things that matter that can achieve the greatest.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I enjoy planning holidays and supporting my  husband with his gardening business. During the Winter, I’ll be keeping myself busy preparing logs and relaxing by the fire but when the weather allows, there is nothing like being outdoors in the countryside and enjoying the simple things in life.
